2005 AMC 10B Problem 19
On a certain math exam, of the students got points, got points, got points, got points, and the rest got points. What is the difference between the mean and the median score on this exam?
Show solution without answering
Key insight
Pretend there are 20 students. The total of all scores divided by 20 gives the mean, 86. The middle students score 85, the median.
Solution
Percents are easier to handle as actual students, so pick a class size that makes every percent a whole number. students works, since each percent here is a multiple of .
- The missing group. , so the other scored .
- Number of students with each score (out of ):
| Score | 70 | 80 | 85 | 90 | 95 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Percent | 10% | 25% | 20% | 15% | 30% |
| Students | 2 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 6 |
3. Median. Line up the scores from lowest to highest. The middle is between the 10th and 11th students. Counting up: students 1 to 2 have , students 3 to 7 have , students 8 to 11 have . So the 10th and 11th both have , and the median is .
4. Mean. Add all the scores:
Divide by : .
5. Difference. .
The answer is .
Why this works
When a problem gives only percents, choosing a convenient class size turns them into real counts without changing the mean or median. The mean uses every score, weighted by how many students got it. The median is found by counting up from the bottom until you reach the middle of the class.
Alternative approach
Work with the percents directly. The mean is . For the median, add up percents from the bottom: covers , brings the total to , and brings it to . The halfway point, , is inside the group.
Concise solution
A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.
The remaining share is , who scored .
Mean. Weight each score by its percent:
Median. Order the scores from low to high and accumulate the percents: covers the bottom , brings it to , and brings it to . The mark falls inside the group, so the median is . (With an even class size the two middle students both score .)
The difference is .
The answer is .
