Key insight

Radii to B and C meet the sides at right angles, so the center angle is 120 degrees. The part inside the circle is the slice cut off by BC.

Solution

The answer is a fraction, so the size does not matter. Let the circle have radius 11 and center OO.

1. Right angles at BB and CC. A radius drawn to a point where a line touches a circle meets that line at a right angle. So ∠ABO=90∘\angle ABO = 90^\circ and ∠ACO=90∘\angle ACO = 90^\circ.
2. The angle at the center. The four angles of shape ABOCABOC add to 360∘360^\circ. The angle at AA is 60∘60^\circ (the triangle is equilateral), so
∠BOC=360∘−60∘−90∘−90∘=120∘.\angle BOC = 360^\circ - 60^\circ - 90^\circ - 90^\circ = 120^\circ.
3. Where the center sits. ∠ABC\angle ABC is only 60∘60^\circ but ∠ABO\angle ABO is 90∘90^\circ, so OO lies past side BCBC, on the opposite side from AA. The extra angle is ∠OBC=90∘−60∘=30∘\angle OBC = 90^\circ - 60^\circ = 30^\circ, and likewise ∠OCB=30∘\angle OCB = 30^\circ.
4. Length of BCBC. Triangle OBCOBC has OB=OC=1OB = OC = 1 and a 120∘120^\circ angle at OO. Draw the line from OO straight down to the middle MM of BCBC. This splits it into two 3030-6060-9090 triangles with long side 11. So OM=12OM = \tfrac12 and BM=32BM = \tfrac{\sqrt3}{2}, which gives BC=3BC = \sqrt3.
5. Area of triangle ABCABC. An equilateral triangle with side ss has area 34s2\tfrac{\sqrt3}{4}s^2:
34⋅3=334.\tfrac{\sqrt3}{4} \cdot 3 = \tfrac{3\sqrt3}{4}.
6. Part of the triangle inside the circle. The circle touches ABAB and ACAC without crossing them, and OO is past BCBC. So the only part of the circle inside the triangle is the slice between chord BCBC and the arc on AA's side. That slice is the 120∘120^\circ pie wedge OBCOBC minus triangle OBCOBC:
- Wedge: 120360⋅π⋅12=π3\tfrac{120}{360} \cdot \pi \cdot 1^2 = \tfrac{\pi}{3}.
- Triangle OBCOBC: 12⋅BC⋅OM=12⋅3⋅12=34\tfrac12 \cdot BC \cdot OM = \tfrac12 \cdot \sqrt3 \cdot \tfrac12 = \tfrac{\sqrt3}{4}.
- Slice: π3−34\tfrac{\pi}{3} - \tfrac{\sqrt3}{4}.
7. Part outside the circle is the triangle minus the slice:
334−(π3−34)=3−π3.\tfrac{3\sqrt3}{4} - \left(\tfrac{\pi}{3} - \tfrac{\sqrt3}{4}\right) = \sqrt3 - \tfrac{\pi}{3}.
8. As a fraction of the triangle:
3−π3334=4333−4π93=43−4π93.\frac{\sqrt3 - \frac{\pi}{3}}{\frac{3\sqrt3}{4}} = \frac{4\sqrt3}{3\sqrt3} - \frac{4\pi}{9\sqrt3} = \frac43 - \frac{4\pi}{9\sqrt3}.
Multiply the last fraction by 33\tfrac{\sqrt3}{\sqrt3}: 4π93=43π27\frac{4\pi}{9\sqrt3} = \frac{4\sqrt3\pi}{27}. So the fraction is 43−43π27\frac43 - \frac{4\sqrt3\pi}{27}.

The answer is (E) 43−43π27\boxed{\textbf{(E)}\ \frac{4}{3}-\frac{4\sqrt{3}\pi}{27}}.

Why this works

When a line touches a circle, the radius to that point makes a right angle with the line. Those right angles fix the angle at the center, and from it every length follows. The area between a chord and its arc is always "pie wedge minus triangle," a piece worth recognizing whenever a circle and a straight edge overlap.

Alternative approach

Estimate to check. The answer 3−π3≈1.732−1.047=0.685\sqrt3 - \frac{\pi}{3} \approx 1.732 - 1.047 = 0.685 is the outside area, and the triangle's area is 334≈1.299\frac{3\sqrt3}{4} \approx 1.299. The fraction is about 0.685÷1.299≈0.530.685 \div 1.299 \approx 0.53. Choice (E) is 1.333−0.806≈0.531.333 - 0.806 \approx 0.53, which matches; choice (A) is about 0.470.47, the fraction inside instead.

Concise solution

A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.

Let OO be the center and take the radius to be 11. Since ABAB is tangent at BB, OB⊥ABOB \perp AB, so ∠ABO=90∘\angle ABO = 90^\circ; likewise ∠ACO=90∘\angle ACO = 90^\circ. In quadrilateral ABOCABOC the angle at AA is 60∘60^\circ, so ∠BOC=360∘−60∘−90∘−90∘=120∘\angle BOC = 360^\circ - 60^\circ - 90^\circ - 90^\circ = 120^\circ. Because ∠ABC=60∘\angle ABC = 60^\circ and ∠ABO=90∘\angle ABO = 90^\circ, the center lies on the opposite side of BCBC from AA, with ∠OBC=30∘\angle OBC = 30^\circ.

Chord BCBC in the isosceles triangle OBCOBC with legs 11 and apex 120∘120^\circ has length 2cos⁡30∘=32\cos 30^\circ = \sqrt3. So the equilateral triangle has side 3\sqrt3 and area
34⋅(3)2=334.\frac{\sqrt3}{4} \cdot (\sqrt3)^2 = \frac{3\sqrt3}{4}.

The circle stays inside ∠BAC\angle BAC (it is tangent to both sides), so the part of the triangle inside the circle is exactly the circular segment cut off by chord BCBC on AA's side. Its area is the 120∘120^\circ sector minus triangle OBCOBC:
120360π−12⋅1⋅1⋅sin⁡120∘=π3−34.\frac{120}{360}\pi - \frac12 \cdot 1 \cdot 1 \cdot \sin 120^\circ = \frac{\pi}{3} - \frac{\sqrt3}{4}.

The fraction of the triangle inside the circle is
π3−34334=4π93−13=43π27−13,\frac{\frac{\pi}{3} - \frac{\sqrt3}{4}}{\frac{3\sqrt3}{4}} = \frac{4\pi}{9\sqrt3} - \frac13 = \frac{4\sqrt3\pi}{27} - \frac13,
so the fraction outside is
1−(43π27−13)=43−43π27.1 - \left(\frac{4\sqrt3\pi}{27} - \frac13\right) = \frac43 - \frac{4\sqrt3\pi}{27}.

The answer is (E) 43−43π27\boxed{\textbf{(E)}\ \frac{4}{3}-\frac{4\sqrt{3}\pi}{27}}.
