Key insight

Percent greater is measured against the number you start from, B: find how much bigger A is (A - B), divide by B, and multiply by 100.

Solution

Start with real numbers to see the pattern, then match it to the choices.

1. An example. If B=100B = 100 and A=150A = 150, then AA is 50%50\% greater than BB, because 5050 extra out of the original 100100 is 50%50\%.
2. What we did. We found the extra amount, A−B=50A - B = 50, and compared it to the starting amount B=100B = 100: 50100=0.5\frac{50}{100} = 0.5, which is 50%50\%.
3. In letters. The extra amount is A−BA - B, and "greater than BB" means BB is the starting amount. So the percent is
x=100×A−BB.x = 100 \times \frac{A - B}{B}.
4. Check the example. 100×150−100100=50100 \times \frac{150 - 100}{100} = 50. Choice (D) would give 100×50150=3313100 \times \frac{50}{150} = 33\frac13, which is wrong.

The answer is (A) 100(A−BB)\boxed{\textbf{(A)}\ 100\left(\frac{A-B}{B}\right)}.

Why this works

Any percent increase is (amount of change) divided by (starting amount), times 100100. The words "greater than BB" tell you that BB is the starting amount, so BB goes on the bottom. When the choices are formulas, trying simple numbers like 100100 and 150150 is a quick and reliable check.

Alternative approach

Write the meaning as an equation. Being x%x\% greater than BB means A=B+x100⋅BA = B + \frac{x}{100} \cdot B. Subtract BB: A−B=x100⋅BA - B = \frac{x}{100} \cdot B. Divide by BB and multiply by 100100: x=100⋅A−BBx = 100 \cdot \frac{A - B}{B}.

Concise solution

A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.

"AA is x%x\% greater than BB" means A=B(1+x100)A = B\left(1 + \frac{x}{100}\right).

Solve for xx: AB=1+x100\frac{A}{B} = 1 + \frac{x}{100}, so x100=AB−1=A−BB\frac{x}{100} = \frac{A}{B} - 1 = \frac{A - B}{B}, and
x=100(A−BB).x = 100\left(\frac{A - B}{B}\right).

The answer is (A) 100(A−BB)\boxed{\textbf{(A)}\ 100\left(\frac{A-B}{B}\right)}.
