2003 AMC 10A Problem 9
Simplify .
Show solution without answering
Key insight
Start at the innermost part: the cube root of x times the square root of x is just the square root of x. Every layer then repeats the same step.
Solution
Nested roots are easiest from the inside out, so start with the innermost piece, .
1. Write as . Then
2. The cube root undoes the cube, so
3. Replace the innermost piece by . The whole expression becomes
Its inside is again , so the expression shrinks to .
4. That is one last time.
Every layer turns back into , so the whole thing equals .
The answer is .
Why this works
The key is that gives back : the square root of feeds into the step and comes out unchanged. Once one layer produces , every layer above it does too. When a problem repeats the same step many times, work out one step and look for something that stays the same.
Alternative approach
Test a number. Take , so . The innermost piece is . The next layer is again , and so is the outer one. The answer for is . Choice (B) would give , and choices (C), (D) and (E) are not either, so only (A) matches.
Concise solution
A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.
Work from the inside. The innermost piece is
So the innermost cube root simply returns . The next layer is then again , which is again , and the outermost layer is the same expression one more time.
Each layer reproduces , so the entire expression equals .
The answer is .
