P1-10~2 minPrint

On an algebra quiz, 10%10\% of the students scored 7070 points, 35%35\% scored 8080 points, 30%30\% scored 9090 points, and the rest scored 100100 points. What is the difference between the mean and median score of the students' scores on this quiz?

Key insight

Pretend there are 100 students. The mean is 87. Counting up from the lowest score, the 50th student falls in the group that scored 90, so the median is 90.

Solution

Percentages are easiest to handle if you imagine exactly 100100 students.

  1. The groups are: 1010 students scored 7070, 3535 scored 8080, 3030 scored 9090, and the rest, 100−10−35−30=25100 - 10 - 35 - 30 = 25, scored 100100.

Mean.

  1. Add up all the points: 10⋅70+35⋅80+30⋅90+25⋅100=700+2800+2700+2500=870010 \cdot 70 + 35 \cdot 80 + 30 \cdot 90 + 25 \cdot 100 = 700 + 2800 + 2700 + 2500 = 8700.
  2. Divide by 100100 students: the mean is 8787.

Median.

  1. Line the students up from lowest score to highest. The median is the score in the middle of the line, around student number 5050.
  2. Students 11 to 1010 scored 7070. Students 1111 to 4545 scored 8080. Students 4646 to 7575 scored 9090.
  3. Students 5050 and 5151 are both in the 9090 group, so the median is 9090.

Difference. 90−87=390 - 87 = 3.

The answer is (C) 3\boxed{\textbf{(C)}\ 3}.

Why this works

When data are given as percentages, pick a convenient number of people, such as 100100, and the percentages become counts. The mean uses every score, weighted by how many people got it. The median only asks where the middle person stands, so you add up the groups until you pass the halfway point. Here the 8080 group stops at 45%45\%, just short of halfway, which pushes the median up to 9090.

Concise solution

A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.

The remaining share of students is 100%−10%−35%−30%=25%100\% - 10\% - 35\% - 30\% = 25\%, and they scored 100100.

Mean. Weight each score by its share:
0.10⋅70+0.35⋅80+0.30⋅90+0.25⋅100=7+28+27+25=87.0.10 \cdot 70 + 0.35 \cdot 80 + 0.30 \cdot 90 + 0.25 \cdot 100 = 7 + 28 + 27 + 25 = 87.

Median. Order the scores from lowest to highest and accumulate the percentages: the 7070s cover 00–10%10\%, the 8080s cover 1010–45%45\%, and the 9090s cover 4545–75%75\%. The middle of the data, the 50%50\% mark, falls inside the 9090 group, so the median is 9090.

The difference is 90−87=390 - 87 = 3.

The answer is (C) 3\boxed{\textbf{(C)}\ 3}.
