2013 AMC 10B Problem 8
Ray's car averages 40 miles per gallon of gasoline, and Tom's car averages 10 miles per gallon of gasoline. Ray and Tom each drive the same number of miles. What is the cars' combined rate of miles per gallon of gasoline?
Show solution without answering
Key insight
Pick an easy distance, like 40 miles each. Ray uses 1 gallon and Tom uses 4, so 80 miles on 5 gallons is 16 miles per gallon.
Solution
The combined rate means total miles driven divided by total gallons used. The problem does not give the distance, and it will not matter, so choose one that makes the division easy.
- Suppose each of them drives miles.
- Ray gets miles per gallon, so he uses gallon.
- Tom gets miles per gallon, so he uses gallons.
- Together they drive miles on gallons.
- Combined rate: miles per gallon.
The answer is .
Why this works
Miles per gallon is a ratio, and you combine ratios by adding up the miles and adding up the gallons, not by averaging the two rates. Because both drivers go the same distance, the distance you pick cancels out, so any convenient number gives the same answer.
Alternative approach
Keep the distance as miles each. Ray uses gallons and Tom uses gallons, so together they use gallons. They drive miles, so the rate is .
Concise solution
A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.
The combined rate is the total distance divided by the total gasoline used. Since the distance is the same for both, pick a convenient one: suppose each drives miles.
Ray uses gallon. Tom uses gallons.
Together they cover miles on gallons, so the combined rate is
The answer is .
