Key insight

An absolute value is never negative, so |−3x| + 5 is always at least 5 and can never equal 0. Each other equation has an actual solution.

Solution

Go through the choices one at a time. For each one, either find a value of xx that works or explain why none can.

  1. (A) (x+7)2=0(x+7)^2 = 0. A square is 00 only when the number being squared is 00. So x+7=0x + 7 = 0 and x=−7x = -7 works.
  2. (B) ∣−3x∣+5=0|-3x| + 5 = 0. Move the 55 over: ∣−3x∣=−5|-3x| = -5. An absolute value is a distance, so it is never negative. It can never equal −5-5, so this equation has no solution.
  3. (C) −x−2=0\sqrt{-x} - 2 = 0 means −x=2\sqrt{-x} = 2, so −x=4-x = 4 and x=−4x = -4. Check: −x=−(−4)=4-x = -(-4) = 4, and 4=2\sqrt{4} = 2. It works. The minus sign is fine because xx itself is negative.
  4. (D) x−8=0\sqrt{x} - 8 = 0 means x=8\sqrt{x} = 8, so x=64x = 64.
  5. (E) ∣−3x∣−4=0|-3x| - 4 = 0 means ∣−3x∣=4|-3x| = 4. Then x=43x = \frac{4}{3} works (and so does x=−43x = -\frac{4}{3}).

Only (B) has no solution.

The answer is (B) ∣−3x∣+5=0\boxed{\textbf{(B)}\ \left|-3x\right|+5=0}.

Why this works

Squares, absolute values and square roots can never come out negative. So an equation that forces one of them to equal a negative number has no solution. A minus sign inside one of them, like −x\sqrt{-x}, is not a problem by itself: it just means xx has to be negative or zero.

Concise solution

A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.

Test each equation.

(A) (x+7)2=0(x+7)^2 = 0 has the solution x=−7x = -7.

(B) ∣−3x∣+5=0|-3x| + 5 = 0 requires ∣−3x∣=−5|-3x| = -5. An absolute value is never negative, so there is no solution.

(C) −x−2=0\sqrt{-x} - 2 = 0 means −x=2\sqrt{-x} = 2, so −x=4-x = 4 and x=−4x = -4. This is valid because −x=4≥0-x = 4 \ge 0.

(D) x−8=0\sqrt{x} - 8 = 0 gives x=64x = 64.

(E) ∣−3x∣−4=0|-3x| - 4 = 0 gives ∣3x∣=4|3x| = 4, so x=±43x = \pm\frac{4}{3}.

Only (B) fails. The answer is (B) ∣−3x∣+5=0\boxed{\textbf{(B)}\ \left|-3x\right|+5=0}.
