Key insight

Write the left side as a 7th power too: (7x)^14 = (49x^2)^7. Equal 7th powers mean equal bases, so 49x^2 = 14x and x = 2/7.

Solution

The exponents 1414 and 77 are related (14=2×714 = 2 \times 7), so try to make both sides a 7th power.

1. Squaring first and then taking the 7th power is the same as taking the 14th power. So
(7x)14=((7x)2)7=(49x2)7.(7x)^{14} = \big((7x)^2\big)^7 = (49x^2)^7.
2. The equation becomes
(49x2)7=(14x)7.(49x^2)^7 = (14x)^7.
3. An odd power like the 7th never gives the same answer for two different numbers (for example 27=1282^7 = 128 and (−2)7=−128(-2)^7 = -128). So the two bases must be equal:
49x2=14x.49x^2 = 14x.
4. The problem says xx is not zero, so we may divide both sides by 7x7x:
7x=2,x=27.7x = 2, \qquad x = \frac{2}{7}.
5. Check: with x=27x = \frac27, we get 7x=27x = 2 and 14x=414x = 4. Is 214=472^{14} = 4^7? Yes, because 47=(22)7=2144^7 = (2^2)^7 = 2^{14}.

The answer is (B) 27\boxed{\textbf{(B)}\ \frac{2}{7}}.

Why this works

Equations with powers get easy when both sides have the same exponent (or the same base). Here 1414 is twice 77, so one side could be rewritten as a 7th power, and the problem turned into a simple equation. The words "non-zero" are a hint that x=0x = 0 would also work and has to be thrown out.

Alternative approach

Test the choices. For x=27x = \frac27 the two bases are 7x=27x = 2 and 14x=414x = 4, and 214=472^{14} = 4^7 is true. For x=1x = 1 you would need 714=1477^{14} = 14^7, that is 497=14749^7 = 14^7, which is false; the other choices fail the same way.

Concise solution

A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.

Rewrite the left side as a seventh power: (7x)14=((7x)2)7=(49x2)7(7x)^{14} = \left((7x)^2\right)^7 = (49x^2)^7. The equation is now
(49x2)7=(14x)7.(49x^2)^7 = (14x)^7.
Seventh powers of real numbers agree only when the bases agree (an odd power never maps two different reals to the same value), so
49x2=14x⟹7x(7x−2)=0.49x^2 = 14x \quad\Longrightarrow\quad 7x(7x - 2) = 0.
The root x=0x = 0 is excluded, leaving 7x=27x = 2, i.e. x=27x = \dfrac{2}{7}.

Check: 7x=27x = 2 and 14x=414x = 4, and 214=472^{14} = 4^7 indeed.

The answer is (B) 27\boxed{\textbf{(B)}\ \frac{2}{7}}.
