Key insight

Red faces are the outside of the big cube: 6 n squared. All faces: 6 n cubed. The fraction red is 1 over n, so n = 4.

Solution

Count the red faces and the total faces separately, then compare.

1. Red faces. Paint only touches the outside of the big cube. Each of its 66 faces is an nn by nn grid of little squares, so there are 6⋅n26 \cdot n^2 red faces. Cutting does not add or remove any paint.
2. All faces. There are n3n^3 small cubes, each with 66 faces, so there are 6⋅n36 \cdot n^3 faces in all.
3. The fraction that is red.
6n26n3=1n.\frac{6n^2}{6n^3} = \frac{1}{n}.
4. Match it to one fourth. 1n=14\frac{1}{n} = \frac{1}{4}, so n=4n = 4.

Check: a 4×4×44 \times 4 \times 4 cube gives 6464 small cubes with 64×6=38464 \times 6 = 384 faces. The red surface has 6×16=966 \times 16 = 96 squares, and 96÷384=1496 \div 384 = \frac{1}{4}.

The answer is (B) 4\boxed{\textbf{(B)}\ 4}.

Why this works

The red faces are exactly the painted surface of the original cube, cut into small squares. Surface grows like n2n^2 while the number of small cubes grows like n3n^3, so the red share is always 1n\frac{1}{n}. Counting the painted area as a whole is much quicker than sorting cubes by how many red faces each one has.

Concise solution

A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.

Count red faces and total faces separately.

Red faces: paint only reaches the outside of the big cube. Each of its 66 faces is an n×nn \times n grid of unit squares, so there are 6n26n^2 red unit faces.

Total faces: there are n3n^3 unit cubes with 66 faces each, so 6n36n^3 faces.

The condition says
6n26n3=1n=14,\frac{6n^2}{6n^3} = \frac{1}{n} = \frac{1}{4},
so n=4n = 4.

The answer is (B) 4\boxed{\textbf{(B)}\ 4}.
