2011 AMC 10A Problem 12

P11-15~2 minPrint

The players on a basketball team made some three-point shots, some two-point shots, and some one-point free throws. They scored as many points with two-point shots as with three-point shots. Their number of successful free throws was one more than their number of successful two-point shots. The team's total score was 61 points. How many free throws did they make?

Key insight

Call the number of two-point shots y. They give 2y points, three-pointers also give 2y points, and free throws give y + 1 points, so 5y + 1 = 61.

Solution

Both conditions compare something with the two-point shots, so let the number of two-point shots be the unknown. Call it yy.

1. Two-point shots: yy shots, worth 2y2y points.
2. Three-point shots: the team scored the same number of points with these as with two-pointers, so they are worth 2y2y points too. (We never need to know how many shots that was.)
3. Free throws: there were one more of these than two-point shots, so y+1y + 1 free throws. Each is worth 11 point, so they give y+1y + 1 points.
4. Total: add the points and set them equal to 6161:
2y+2y+(y+1)=61.2y + 2y + (y + 1) = 61.
That is 5y+1=615y + 1 = 61, so 5y=605y = 60 and y=12y = 12.
5. The number of free throws is y+1=13y + 1 = 13.

Check: 1212 two-pointers make 2424 points, 88 three-pointers make 2424 points, and 1313 free throws make 1313 points. 24+24+13=6124 + 24 + 13 = 61. ✓

The answer is (A) 13\boxed{\textbf{(A)}\ 13}.

Why this works

Pick the unknown that every condition refers to, and each other amount can be written in terms of it. Read each condition carefully: one compares points, the other compares number of shots. Mixing those up is the usual mistake.

Concise solution

A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.

Let yy be the number of two-point shots. They scored 2y2y points from these, and the three-point shots produced the same number of points, 2y2y. The free throws numbered y+1y + 1, worth y+1y + 1 points.

Total score:
2y+2y+(y+1)=5y+1=61,2y + 2y + (y + 1) = 5y + 1 = 61,
so y=12y = 12. The number of free throws is y+1=13y + 1 = 13.

(Check: 1212 two-pointers give 2424 points, 88 three-pointers give 2424 points, 1313 free throws give 1313; total 6161.)

The answer is (A) 13\boxed{\textbf{(A)}\ 13}.
