Fractions & Decimals
Repeating decimals, unit fractions, rational number properties, terminating decimals
What you need to know
- Which decimals end. Put in lowest terms first. Its decimal ends (terminates) exactly when has no prime factors except and . If , the number of decimal places is the larger of and . Example: has places, since .
- Repeating decimals. A bar means the digits repeat forever. If a block of digits repeats right after the decimal point, the fraction is the block over nines, that is, over . Example: .
- Digits before the repeat. For , the numerator is the digits through the first block () minus the digits before the repeat (). The denominator has a per repeating digit, then a per digit before the repeat. Example: .
- Length of the repeat. For with sharing no factor with , the repeating block's length (the period) is the smallest for which leaves remainder when divided by , written . When is prime, the period divides . Example: has period , which divides .
Periods worth knowing:
| Fraction | Decimal | Period |
|---|---|---|
| , | , | |
| , | , |
- Unit fractions. , so . Example: .
- Moving the decimal point places right multiplies by . Example: becomes , times as much.
- Fractions and decimals match. Every rational number (a fraction of two integers) has a decimal that ends or, from some point on, repeats; and every such decimal is a fraction. Example: , while never repeats, so it is not a fraction.
How AMC 10 tests it
- "Which digit is in the th decimal place of ?" Find the period, then the remainder of the position divided by the period (problems 5–12).
- Convert a repeating decimal to a fraction in lowest terms, then give the sum of the numerator and denominator.
- "How many fractions with terminate?" Cancel the primes other than and from (problems 10–16).
- Telescoping sums of or , hidden in a word problem or a series.
- Equations about a number and its decimal point moved, such as .
Standard approaches
- Change decimals to fractions at once; is safer to work with than .
- Reduce to lowest terms before judging whether the decimal ends or reading off a period.
- For the th digit, find the block, then divide by the period. The remainder is the position in the block, and remainder means the last digit. Example: and , so the th digit is the th one, .
- For telescoping, split each term into two unit fractions so the middle terms cancel: and .
- To count terminating , divide all the s and s out of ; the decimal ends exactly when what is left divides . Example: leaves , so ends exactly when divides .
Worked example
Let and . What is ?
(A) (B) (C) (D) (E)
Step 1: find . , which is . So and .
Step 2: find . and have the same digits after the point. Subtracting, , so .
Step 3: divide. Dividing by means multiplying by :
The answer is .
Pitfalls
- Using instead of : is , not . Also watch digits before the repeat: is , not .
- Judging whether the decimal ends before reducing. Example: ends, though has a factor of .
- Reading the first digit of the block when the remainder is ; it should be the last. Example: the th digit of is , not .
- Rounding decimals partway through. Keep exact fractions until the last step.
Traps that recur
- Counting only the nine solutions with a = b = c, or allowing b or c to be 0 (all three digits must be nonzero). (2022 AMC 10A #17)
- Forgetting that a fraction may be added to itself (such as 1/2 + 1/2 = 1), or listing a sum twice (8 arises as 4 + 4 and as 3/2 + 13/2). (2021 AMC Fall 10B #7)
- Counting the zeros in 1/10^20 only (19 or 20) and ignoring the extra factor 1/2^20, or miscounting the shift by one. (2020 AMC 10B #12)
- Writing the difference as ab/99 (forgetting the two-place shift), which gives ab = 0.75 and no valid digits. (2021 AMC 10A #8)
