2023 AMC 10B Problem 8
What is the units digit of ?
Show solution without answering
Key insight
Only the last digit of each base matters. Last digits of powers of 2 and of 3 repeat every 4 steps, so use the remainders of 2023 and 2022.
Solution
The last digit of a product depends only on the last digits of the numbers being multiplied. So ends in the same digit as , and ends in the same digit as .
1. Powers of . The last digits are
so the last digit goes and then repeats every steps.
2. Where is in that cycle? , so the remainder is . Step of the cycle is . So ends in .
3. Powers of . The last digits are () and then repeat every steps.
4. Where is in that cycle? , so the remainder is . Step is . So ends in .
5. Add. , which ends in .
The answer is .
Why this works
When you add or multiply, the last digit of the answer depends only on the last digits you started with. So a huge power becomes a small power of a single digit, and those repeat in short cycles. Divide the exponent by the cycle length and use the remainder. Watch one detail: a remainder of means the last step of the cycle, not the first.
Concise solution
A shorter write-up, the way contest solutions are usually written. It may take a different route from the solution above.
The units digit of a power depends only on the units digit of the base, so we need the last digits of and .
Powers of end in with period . Since , the exponent has remainder , and ends in the third entry, .
Powers of end in , also period . Since , ends in the second entry, .
The sum ends in the units digit of , namely .
The answer is .
